Essay / Similarities Between Miss Amelia and Cousin Lymon typical gender roles. However, when books featuring female characters outside of these traditional roles began to be published, children were able to develop new ideas about acceptable roles for women (Feely). Similarly, Carson McCullers uses Miss Amelia, Cousin Lymon, and Marvin Macy to show how those who adhere to gender roles are viewed by their communities as well as how those who do not are generally viewed. For example, cousin Lymon exhibited more feminine characteristics and was generally considered a gossip and a nuisance by the townspeople. Marvin Macy, on the other hand, was a very handsome and masculine man, described as an "evil character" (McCullers 27) who had a horrible reputation, but he was still adored by many of the women in town.
