Essay / Coming To America Film Analysis - 1032
According to our assigned text, ethnocentrism is defined as a tendency to think that our own culture is superior to other cultures (Martin & Nakayama, 2013 p.5). We can observe it through different extracts throughout the film. The African characters, especially the prince's father, believe that their culture is superior to that of the American characters and I understood that this was a representation of ethnocentrism. Additionally, differences between economic classes are also depicted in the film. Just as our text explains, there are disparities between classes, even if they tend to go unnoticed (Martin & Nakayama, 2013 p.14). In the film “Coming to America,” I made several observations related to both ethnocentrism and economic class disparities. For example, King Joffer openly states "our son cannot date such a girl", which can be seen as ethnocentrism and economic class disparity. King Joffer offensively refers to Americans as inferior to them in the following quote "The man is inferior to me and so is his daughter", which suggests the economic disparity between the two and is unacceptable from his point of view. Additionally, King Jaffore attempts to redeem the Americans by insulting them by stating, “I know you have been disturbed. I am ready to compensate you. Shall we say a million American dollars? The American father, Cleo is immediately insulted and furious, telling him that he did not care whether or not he was king in his country and that his money was not acceptable. Cleo angrily declared "you can't buy my daughter". Additionally, Cleo said "this is America" in an attempt to make him aware that their standards were not necessarily welcomed or appropriate in America. Again, these examples speak to ethnocentrism and economic disparities from what I understood from the text. THE
