Police corruption is a form of police misconduct in which law enforcement officers seek personal gain and abuse their power to achieve it. A common example of police corruption is accepting bribes in exchange for not prosecuting a suspect or even dropping an investigation. Another, more extreme example is police officers tampering with evidence in order to secure the conviction of their suspects. When such situations arise, individuals accused of a crime are condemned outright. Their trial is unfair, and prosecutors have evidence that will undoubtedly convince a jury or judge that the defendant is indeed guilty, whether innocent or not. One of the most recent and high-profile incidents involving police fraud would be the 1995 OJ Simpson case, which simultaneously served as an example of the imperfections of the double jeopardy rule.
