Essay / Theme of the Odyssey: Disguise - 696
In the dictionary, disguise is defined as “changing an appearance by concealing one's identity”. To people's minds, illusions cover up errors and hide unimportant features. The Odyssey, by Homer, describes acts disguised by many different acts on Odysseus, Penelope and Telemachus. The characters in the Odyssey disguised themselves to escape the problems of life and solve the problems they encountered in their own way. Although disguises cover people on the outside, they do not cover people on the inside. They fight their way back to their original state. Odysseus covers himself by begging to get through all the suitors without being killed. Penelope hid her true self from suitors, so she didn't have to marry another man. Telemachus disguised his feelings so that they could not defeat him. Odysseus, the most spiritual man, during a 20-year journey, showed many instances of disguise. Odysseus was one of the most honorable men in the Trojan War; he helped by leading his men to Troy. But at the end of the war, he forgot to praise the help of the gods after the war, so the god Poseidon sent a storm to continue his journey. When Odysseus disguised himself, he was completely under the new reality he had created for himself. When Odysseus returned home to Ithaca, he was determined not to reveal himself. So Athena disguised herself as an old beggar and fought against him so that he would not go to find his long-awaited wife. He finally saw the son he had been deprived of for 20 years and showed himself and proved himself to his now eldest son, Telemachus. Fighting him not to say anything to him, Odysseus stood up and spoke to him in a divine manner, and said "I am your father." The first thing he could think to tell his son was where he was or that he had missed him, but instead he told him... in the middle of a paper... a disguise was forced on his face every day, for 20 years until the love of his life came back. To her, the mask was like a girl; he clung to her and conveyed his feelings to her. It also became his way of life; she begins to live from this sensory mask and lives with it for 20 years. Since she sucked in her disguise, she can't take it off until her unknown husband comes home. In the story, the characters rely on their disguised appearance and feel like they have forgotten who they were. For them, it's always nice to do or be something you're not, but for them, it's the best thing for them. Ulysses and Penelope use it to get away from the unknown. Odysseus, Telemachus and Penelope want everything to return to normal but cannot because of their new disguised identities. But no matter what someone's true identity is, you'll never beat someone's old identity..
