    IntroductionIn general, workers represent half of the European population and are the main contributors to economic and social development. Among the main social determinants of health are hazards and risks in the work environment. Health, work capacity and well-being of the working population are among the priority areas of good health-conscious governance in all policies. The occupational health system in Germany has existed for more than a century and is based on statutory accident insurance [1,4]. Following the conventions of the International Labor Organization (ILO), Germany has a comprehensive national occupational safety and health system. (SST). Germany has ratified 83 ILO conventions and all OSH legislation is harmonized with EU directives. A joint German OSH strategy (“Gemeinsame Deutsche Arbeitsschutzstrategie”, GDA) was developed and implemented on 5 November 2008. The German federal government, the 16 regional governments and the accident insurance institutions assume joint responsibility and equal for the strategy, because as well as an important role of the social partners, that is to say employers and employees (Figure 1) [1,4]. The main intentions of the Joint OSH Strategy are to maintain and strengthen employability, which includes promoting lifelong learning, supporting general health. objectives, reduce the costs of the social insurance system and increase the competitiveness of businesses [4,5]. This overview document focuses on the characteristics and essential elements of the common occupational safety and health strategy in Germany. The central issues of the joint OSH strategy in Germany are the development of common OSH goals, agreement on priority action areas and priority work programs, which are implemented according to uniform principles; the evaluation of OSH objectives, areas and work programs. The results of the first phase are discussed, further improvements and new goals have been agreed by all parties involved..
