Although the death penalty has not been proven to deter crime, it is still considered an option to reduce crime rates. Other countries such as Japan, India, Thailand and many Caribbean islands, such as Barbados, are not very keen on the death penalty as a deterrent to crime. The death penalty is very expensive for a single execution. To send someone to death row in Florida, the state with the most people on death row, it would cost a total of about $3.2 million (Bedau 16). For a person to be incarcerated in a state prison each year, it would cost approximately $16,000 (Hood 84). It is cheaper to punish someone with life in prison than to send criminals to prison.
