Essay / My Motivation for Becoming a Physician Assistant
Upon entering college, I became a member of several medical organizations that gave me the opportunity to volunteer and interact with people heading into the field. same domain. As my interest in the medical field began to grow, I applied to a summer program and was accepted into a six-week medical career diversity program at UTMB Galveston, where I met and followed several doctors, residents, medical assistants and nurses. It was here, at UTMB, that I discovered the AP profession. For an entire day, I was placed with a primary care physician assistant who was compassionate and communicated well with his patients. I witnessed so many personal and emotional cases that day, and my observation of the PA caring for her patients inspired me. A major goal of this clinic is the prevention and control of chronic diseases. Seeing the PA take the extra time to explain the purpose of the medication and its use and to assure the patient that there was no drug interaction, was something I admired about him and his profession . Under their supervision, I have had the privilege of observing how the two have very similar fundamental responsibilities and privileges when it comes to patient care. Typical patients were routine or hospital follow-ups and presented with problems such as chest pain, hypertensive emergency, or other congestive symptoms. During this shadowing experience, I saw the PA spend more time educating the patient, counseling patients and family members, and often reviewing patient tests in detail. I think because I have always enjoyed serving people who need it most, forming a close relationship with patients, especially those who need it most, would be very rewarding for me. Through my life experiences and after shadowing several doctors in different specialties, I found it difficult to accept the idea of ultimately choosing an area of medicine as a lifelong career. Learning about the flexibility of the PA profession continued to spark my interest in this career, and I have pursued it ever since. Over the past two years, I have grown and learned tremendously in my current position as a certified medical scribe in the specialty of general surgery. One of the main priorities of my job is to write a very detailed description of the patient's chief complaint and their treatment plan. This provided in-depth knowledge of the gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal and integumentary systems. It has been a rewarding experience to see patients return and observe the impact of treatment on their symptoms and overall quality of life. I also started writing at the DHR Vein Institute. I have always enjoyed the fast pace of a surgical trauma center, but I also enjoy the calmer atmosphere of a private clinic. Having the opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment has helped me work under pressure and, more importantly, improve my time management skills. I learned to develop a collaborative relationship with physicians and colleagues who helped me better understand the patient's needs. Although I enjoyed working as a medical scribe, alongside the doctor, I hope to help patients to a greater extent and play a more.
