  • Essay / House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros - 948

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is about a girl who struggles to find her true self. Esperanza sees typical characters like Sally and Rafaela. There is also her neighbor Marin who shows the “real” identity of the women of Mango Street. She also sees that her mother is and is not like that at the same time. Esperanza's main struggle is that of beauty. This explains why most of the negative people Esperanza encounters on Mango Street, and her gender, helped her see the mold she had to fill to give herself an identity. Esperanza sees all the women around her, and most of them are the same. The general idea of the women of Mango Street is that they belong to their husbands. They can't do anything unless their husband allows them. It also starts at a young age. Young girls like Esperanza see the women around them and think that is how they live. They admire them so they start to mature faster than they should. Sally is one of them. Sally likes the attention she gets from boys, but her father doesn't like it. Sally grew up and married at a young age. “Sally says she likes being married because she can buy her own things when her husband gives her money. She is happy, except that sometimes her husband gets angry and once he broke the door, through which his foot went, although most of the time he is fine. Except he won't let her talk on the phone. And he doesn't let her look out the window. (Cisneros 101) Sally takes advantage of the influence of other women around her to think that marriage is the best thing for her. Esperanza saw this coming when she knew she couldn't save Sally. That's because it was already happening. Esperanza saw that Sally was in the middle of paper......pieces to complete her mold. Why should she be attached and not pursue what she loves? Esperanza eventually comes to the conclusion that she doesn't need to fit the Mango Street mold. She also realizes that by creating her own world, she can do bigger and better things and come back to help others on Mango Street. Not everyone can fit the same mold and Esperanza made hers. . Esperanza's departure shows that she is a leader and I hope the others on Mango Street follow her path. Maybe other people will fit Esperanza's mold or take her as an example. Esperanza used other women as an example to make something of herself so that all the negative people she meets and has in her life will make her the person she wanted to be.
