    The last decade marks the beginning of what is known as the “Harlem Renaissance”. The beginning of this new movement began in Harlem, New York City, after the Great War. But the Harlem Renaissance was not limited to Harlem, but spread throughout urban communities in the Northeast and Midwest of the United States. At this time, many people were flocking to Harlem to participate in the burgeoning new musical genre we know as jazz. People from all over New York came to these new jazz nightclubs, the most popular being the Cotton Club, Connie's Inn, and Small's Paradise. The popularity of these jazz clubs came from the shift in record companies from recording only white jazz groups to black jazz groups, hoping that this would bring in more revenue. Newcomers who began recording with these companies included Mamie Smith, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Earl Hines and the Red Spikes. The new way of playing jazz in the 1920s was a more upbeat style called "Harlem Stride Style." During the 1920s gave birth to a wave of new intellect....
