Human nature dictates that every action, no matter how selfless it may seem, is inspired by a selfish reason. Selfishness is a personality trait that every human being possesses. Despite what people may believe, selfishness is a part of us and drives the decisions we make. According to the Oxford Dictionary, to be selfish means to be “concerned with one’s own interests or pleasures.” People make decisions based on what they want. They live as if the effect of their actions does not matter. All that matters is the benefits they will get even if they know the end result may have negative consequences. Selfishness is all around us and without it, humans would have no motivation to do anything. The extent of these selfish actions varies greatly as it includes all actions performed by humans. After Hamlet leaves the room, Ophelia begins to state the difference in Hamlet's behavior: "Oh, what a noble spirit is here overturned!..../ This unsurpassed form and characteristic of youth blown/Exploded of ecstasy. Oh, woe is me/I saw what I saw, see what I see! (3.1.153-163). By comparing his mother to Ophelia who was not involved in any of his mother's actions, Hamlet has placed Ophelia in a state of sadness as she fears that she has lost this former noble Hamlet. To conclude based on our three points: Hamlet murdering Polonius, his rude comments towards him and comparing Ophelia to Gertrude proves that Hamlet was selfish towards Ophelia. All his actions were due to his selfishness. Hamlet performed these actions without thinking about the consequences it could bring. While Hamlet only thought of himself, his actions led to Ophelia's death..
