  • Essay / The Benefits of Genetically Modified Organisms - 790

Genetically modified organisms or better known as GMOs are one of the most debated topics in the world. GMOs were created when a scientist took a crop and transferred genes from another plant or bacteria to modify elements of the original crop. Once together, the new modified plant will fight against disease, drought or certain types of insects. The gene is inserted by artificially assembling it and cutting open the plant you want to modify. Changes are something that cannot be found in nature or in the process of crossing plants. The two most commonly used GMOs in the United States are soy and corn. Two plants have many benefits, soybeans are now resistant to a herbicide called Roundup. A new soybean plant allows farmers to kill weeds with Roundup without killing the plant itself, surprisingly. Corn benefits by feeding more people than it normally would and helping farmers grow more at the same time. Although the most commonly used crops around the world are: corn, soybeans, cotton, canola and sugar beets. While these plants have benefits, they also present multiple concerns for humans. Corn has had the worst reaction in humans so far, it has been linked to many health problems, such as weight gain and organ disruption. Other concerns are these frequently asked questions; “What is this going to do to my body?” "" and "Will there be long-term concerns?" Many developing countries do not believe in these genetically modified foods because they often think that these crops and meats are very bad for them. Although there were many polls to see if people wanted their foods labeled, the biotech lobby made it impossible to pass. Every time there has been a survey, a significant majority of ......middle of paper ......torn were fed GMO-based foods. More than 60 other countries around the world have banned or restricted these products. If people are unsure about the foods they are taking into their hands, they do the GMO testing themselves. If they decided to start labeling in the US I would still eat these foods, 91% of Americans are not. with what I say. This is my own opinion, my family is all farmers and I know we always want to get the most out of our crops. That makes a huge difference to money coming in and feeding your own family before you can provide for the rest of the world. I don't see any difference, they are making a plant that has been modified to save farmers money and stop wasting so many crops. I would eat the food with no problem or question asked, even if it was labeled.
