Essay / Evidence-Based Practice in Mental Health - 1803
Evidence-Based Practice in Mental HealthIn 2003, health care leaders in North Carolina realized they needed to make changes to the services they they provided in their community's mental health programs (McLaughlin & McLauglin, 2008). The North Carolina Science to Service Project (NCS2S) was implemented to provide more coordinated and quality healthcare services to their mental health patients (McLaughlin & McLauglin, 2008). The objectives of the project were to better tailor health services to their mental health care patient population, apply evidence-based practice guidelines in their mental health practice, ensure appropriate resources were allocated to departments and launch statewide training programs for their healthcare professionals. (McLaughlin and McLauglin, 2008). This case study examines the integration of mental health services into the community setting, the use of evidence-based practice guidelines, the effect on stakeholders, and the role of health professionals in implementing implementing change. Why Change Was Necessary The impetus for change to improve the Health services provided to people with mental illness arose because deinstitutionalization efforts begun in the 1970s were failing to adequately help this population (McLaughlin and McLauglin , 2008). McLauglin and McLauglin (2008) explain that North Carolina's four regional mental health hospitals operated as independent entities and did not strive to provide more coordinated services to local community mental health centers. They reveal that local community mental health centers were not receiving the resources needed to implement effective rehabilitation programs for their patients (McLaughlin & McLauglin, 2008).
