  • Essay / Keeping Prostitution Illegal Leads to Crime - 2254

“Sales is legal, and sex is legal, so why isn't selling sex legal? » Prostitution has been a controversial topic globally for many years. The idea that prostitution involves selling one's body in exchange for money has had a negative impact on our society since its introduction. It is somewhat strange to think that prostitution, considered the oldest profession in the world, is illegal and destructive to society. Originally, prostitution was largely legal in the United States. Some of the women of the American Revolution who followed the Continental Army served as sexual partners for soldiers and officers. In the 19th century, brothels-parlors catered to the upper class clientele, while bawdy houses catered to the lower class. In concert halls, men could eat, listen to music, watch fights, and pay for sex. Around 1890, the term "red light district" was first recorded in the United States. A red light district is a part of an urban area where prostitution and sex-oriented businesses, such as sex shops, strip clubs, adult theaters, etc., are concentrated. Prostitution was made illegal in almost every state between 1910 and 1915, largely due to the influence of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, which played an important role in outlawing drug use and was a force majeure in the ban on alcohol. In 1917, the legally defined Storyville prostitution district in New Orleans was closed by the federal government. In all but one U.S. state, buying and selling sexual services is illegal and generally considered a crime. Regulated brothels are legal in several Nevada counties. Concern about legalizing prostitution has surfaced in the public...... middle of paper ... businesses like brothels could help the economy as a whole. Prostitution has existed for thousands of years, and will continue for thousands more. Legalizing prostitution would lead to a reduction in morality issues, help reduce the number of sexually transmitted diseases between prostitutes and those who patronize them, reduce crime, and ultimately improve economic activity in the United States. Overall, there are many arguments for and against legalizing prostitution. Such debates could continue for centuries, but what cannot be disputed is that individuals deserve the right to seek employment in the profession of their choice. Sex workers should have the same labor rights as other workers and the same human rights as other people. So, as George Carlin says: "Selling is legal, and sex is legal, so why isn't selling sex legal?" ??”
