Essay / What Means What - 1018
Who Said What Means Ask yourself these questions before reading Kincaid's "Girl." Do you know what a housewife is, being a student or a child, receiving advice from an elder and being called something that you are not? What is this story about, is it a story or just a poem in essay form? What mood are you in right now to decipher this story in your own words? The story depends on your mood and changes the whole perception of this story. Here again, isn't this how the writing is about to begin? Interpreting the story as Mr. Hass told us, I did, but I analyzed it like a poem looking for underlying meaning. There must have been much more than what we had been told. I had a totally different perception. After the discussion, it seemed relevant to me to approach the story in a different way. But I thought it was a mother-daughter conversation. The “daughter’s speech” (my interpretation of the narration) consisted of orders spoken by her mother. The advice she was given was to not become a slut, which was repeated several times in this story. But the question I ask you is this: was this situation present in the young girl's life, or was it a memory of a situation she had previously had with her mother? Does this story take place in the present or the past? It could be in the present with a young girl, but I also came to the conclusion that it could be in the past and the italicized words could continue to repeat in her mother's forgotten speech. Now is when she needs her mother's comfort and not just what she wanted at the time of the conversation. From another perspective, although it could be in the present time and simply recalled by the narrator to open his imagination and make him draw his own conclusions. Is the story a poem or is it a story, isn't this story just a page with sentences making one person think of another person. Well that's what I took away from it and now I can only get more confused thinking about it, the story is so broad that anyone's interpretation could be seen as correct. Not only can the story change with each person, it also changes with the reader's mood at that moment, not only try to analyze it and your mind just wonders about the choices Kincaid gives you..
