  • Essay / Sexism in the workplace - 704

Have you ever felt discriminated against in the workplace? Usually, women are the people most often mistreated in the workplace. There are many reasons why women are discriminated against, but none of them are an excuse for not being successful. Women face sexism by being paid less than men, not being promoted as equally as men, and facing other gender stereotypes. But sexism can be resolved by confronting their internal and external barriers and finding people who can help them. Women have to face problems. because of their gender. In the article “Sexism is a problem in Silicon Valley, critics say,” LA Times, October 24, 2013, Jessica Guynn mentions that discrimination against women exists at tech companies because of their gender. Some women who work at tech companies have faced sexual and death threats. Some tech companies don't have senior women because women aren't promoted as well as men. Many women decide not to study to become engineers because they are not as prevalent in the tech work world as a result. Tech companies have gender issues. Additionally, women are paid less than men for the same type of work. According to Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg mentions that women received fifty-nine cents for every dollar paid to men in 1996, but women protested to increase the compensation to seventy-seven cents (6). This means that even though a woman and a man do the same work as an engineer, both perform the same tasks and have the same responsibilities in technology, men are paid twenty-three cents more than women. Additionally, women suffer from "gender reduction", meaning they have to pay to be part of the workplace or society...... middle of paper...... in society, and housework is a job for both men and women. In conclusion, if women are brave enough to break down their own barriers and are surrounded by people who truly help them, they can succeed in the workplace; plus, they will see less sexism in their workplace. In the past, women fought for the right to vote and for civil rights. Now women and others can fight to eliminate discrimination against women in the workplace. The United States has fought for the right to eliminate discrimination many times, including after the Civil War and World War II. Today, as a country, they must fight to eliminate discrimination against women in order to be called "the land of freedom and liberty."
