Essay / Piggy as an adult figure from Lord of the Flies
Piggy as an adult figure from Lord of the FliesIn the most dire situations, some children are able to put aside their childish behaviors and become a mature adult figure, who takes the right actions and makes thoughtful decisions. According to the National Institutes of Health, only a few children are capable of acting maturely in certain situations; other completely normal children are not capable of taking it seriously. Although some people think that a child who behaves like an adult is no different from other children, being an adult can be very important and helpful in many situations, including those without any parental supervision. In William Golding's most memorable novel, The Lordship of the Flies, the most intelligent character – an overweight boy named Piggy – makes valuable efforts and contributions to help others. When Piggy finds himself stranded on an island with many other boys, he proves to be the most mature and sensible. Considering it is one of the last abilities to mature in the brain, Piggy possesses remarkable reasoning and problem-solving abilities for a twelve-year-old boy. Despite the fact that Piggy is unpopular with most of the big kids on the island, he still tries to convey his adult knowledge and opinions. Piggy's love for civilization, justice, and common sense shows how truly he represents the rational adult figure on the island. The first point proving how Piggy represents the rational adult figure on the island is that his approach to survival is that of what an adult would do. . At the beginning of the book, Piggy maturely takes it upon himself to write down the names of all the children. He also “moved through the crowd, asking for names and frowning to remember them” (14). His mature outlook on things, his rational approach to survival and the way he acts as a conscientious father prove how Piggy is the adult figure of the island. Without Piggy on the island, the boys would likely have turned to savagery much sooner, leading to more deaths. In Lord of the Flies, his character plays a major role, serving as an adult pacifist authority figure. When an authoritative figure is needed, someone – regardless of age – will always take over. Few children can act so maturely; so when they do, it should not be ignored. These children are important and imperative in helping others endure situations ranging from worst case to everyday scenarios. The adult qualities instilled in some children can radically change the lives of others.
