Essay / Essay on Abuse of Power in the Catholic Church
Abuse of power in the Catholic Church has been a problem for a variety of reasons. For example, priests and others use their power for their own gain, and even some individuals abuse their power to oppose the Catholic Church. Throughout its history, the Catholic Church has experienced numerous abuses of power. Some people think nothing has been done to fix this problem, while others think so. As with any issue, there is some misunderstanding. The child abuse scandal is not always presented fairly. Often the media portrays the Catholic Church in an extremely negative way, without reporting the positive things it does. For example, there is a lawyer in California who filed a report saying that there are many sexual abuse claims that are fraudulent and have been motivated by the easy money that can be made from the Catholic Church, which is generally hated by those who sit in judgment (Mirus 1). There are people who take advantage of the vulnerable state of the Church for their own gain, in which the accused and the Church become the real victims. Many victims' defense groups also make a living and benefit greatly from the misfortunes of the Church. Additionally, some of the lawyers who represent victims take most of the money awarded to victims. There is one case in which a victim known as GB “…claims that lawyers absorbed $877,000 of his $900,000 settlement” (Mirus 1). The lawyers who did this profit greatly from the victims' misfortune. Not only that, but some priests are wrongly accused. This destroys their reputation and causes great frustration. Such a detail should be shared in the media, along with all other media coverage. The sc...... middle of paper ......used children, according to Vatican figures. But while several bishops have resigned following sexual abuse scandals, among those who ignored the behavior of offenders or even intervened to protect them, few have been sanctioned by the Vatican.” This shows that there is still much to be done on this issue. In conclusion, most people believe that the issue of sexual abuse has not been addressed enough and that more action needs to be taken against abusers. Many are not satisfied with everything that has been done. News segments that report on crimes committed by Catholic Church leaders fail to have a fair and balanced debate about what the Church is doing to correct the abuses of power and crimes that have been committed. The Catholic Church continues to work to prevent new cases of abuse and to correct any cases of past abuse..
