The term depression is widely misused in today's society. All humans go through periods of life where they are sad for a relatively short period of time, which is considered normal. Those who experience sadness for long periods of time may suffer from depression. Two terms used to refer to classifications of depression are major depressive disorder and dysthymia. Individual diagnosis of these classifications depends on the duration and severity of symptoms experienced by the individual. The causes of these depressive states may be due to genetics or insufficient production of neurotransmitters, which provide the brain with the input needed to regulate psychological well-being. Two examples of depressive conditions classified under major depressive disorder or dysthymia are bipolar disorder and postpartum depression. Psychology doctors have come to the conclusion that if correctly diagnosed, depression is a treatable illness. Although studies have shown that certain environments and the presence of depression may be more prevalent based on gender, age, and ethnicity, it is imperative not to misinterpret the context of studies. We all need to be aware that everyone is susceptible to depression. Whether it is a family member or an acquaintance, it is imperative to know the symptoms of depression, if one may find oneself in the company of such a person. A person who suffers from depression will usually have several distinct symptoms. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, these symptoms are "a lack of interest and pleasure in daily activities, significant...... middle of paper ...... over several weeks, its air discouragement had subsided and he was back to enjoying life. As the National Institute of Mental Health states, “Depression is a common but serious illness. Most people with depression need treatment to get better” (2). Although this story is fictional, it gives a general overview of what depression is like. My intention in writing this article was not to make everyone an expert on depression, but to promote awareness of this illness. Depression is the number one emotional disorder in the United States.
