Human ambitions contrast with the notion of social harmony, as evidenced by historical examples of absolute monarchy. The tyrants carried out assaults on the inhabitants, simply fueled by their desire for power. Entire sections of the population have suffered for the benefit of the luxury of the elites. In order to maintain such privileges, the elite must silence the skeptics. Such abuse of absolute power led to new designs on power structures, which ultimately led to the development of modern democracy. Such examples include the power struggle between the English and French monarchies and the independence of the United States. During the reign of Charles I, his decision to ignore Parliament altogether made him a controversial figure. Additionally, his marriage to a Roman Catholic princess at a time of turbulence between Protestants and Catholics (England being predominantly Protestant) further contributed to his controversies1. Parliament, although limited in power, gained de facto power in previous centuries, making it an important group in the kingdoms. Because of their power, the king could only adjust taxes with their approval. During the Thirty Years' War, Charles I wanted to intervene, which would require heavy taxes to offset foreign spending. His decision to appoint an unpopular duke as commander of the English army sparked further hostility and criticism from Parliament, seen as the voice of a society1. In response, Charles I dissolved Parliament and reconvened another, which, unfortunately for him, created the Petition of Rights which he was forced to sign2.
