    The post of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights was established following the 1993 World Conference. Its main objective is to strengthen the efforts of the United Nations to establish a system so that all can enjoy human rights and fundamental freedoms. . Since the creation of the position, it has helped serve as the primary focal point and advocacy tool for human rights issues within the United Nations and beyond. Navanethem Pillay was appointed by the Secretary-General following approval by the General Assembly as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on July 28, 2008.
