The post of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights was established following the 1993 World Conference. Its main objective is to strengthen the efforts of the United Nations to establish a system so that all can enjoy human rights and fundamental freedoms. . Since the creation of the position, it has helped serve as the primary focal point and advocacy tool for human rights issues within the United Nations and beyond. Navanethem Pillay was appointed by the Secretary-General following approval by the General Assembly as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on July 28, 2008. Effective September 1, 2012, Navi Pillay was approved for an additional 2 years as High Commissioner. have always existed and since the creation of the United Nations in 1948, these issues have had a major impact on its planning policies and procedures. One of the first steps taken to create an international standard was the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. After years of trial and error, a World Conference on Human Rights was held from June 14 to 25, 1993. It was there that the UN Declaration and Program of Action was adopted.
