Essay / The Process of Plastic Surgery - 1256
Surgery is well known all over the world as it has become a necessity for most people. Nowadays, having a good appearance has become a major factor that makes people take the risk of having plastic surgery. Hunter, Savin & Dahl (2003) stated that “the distinction between traditional dermatologic surgery and cosmetic surgery is blurring” (p. 321). However, surgical procedures are not only for beauty, but also for those with irregularities in appearance. For example, some people will look for a surgeon after facing a skin problem or having birthmarks on their body. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (2010) stated that 11.7 million cosmetic surgeries were performed in the United States alone. This proved that plastic surgery has gone wild over the years. Plastic surgery is “the process of forming new body structures to replace missing parts” (Lusted, 2010, p.18). There are six main phases in a cosmetic surgery process which involve making a wise decision in choosing a surgeon, going through evaluation, discussion of expectations, physical examination, surgeon's instructions to prepare surgery and admission to a recovery room (see Figure 1 in Appendix 1). Firstly, before the surgical procedure, the patient must make a wise decision in choosing a suitable surgeon. The surgeries are considered elective surgeries and most of the time they are not emergencies, so they still have time to choose and learn about the operation (Agency for Researchers and Quality Health Care, 2005). They should know that they have the legal right to choose any surgeon. The most important thing is that the patient should make sure whether the surgeon is licensed or not. In addition to this, the patient can collect information in the form of mu...... middle of paper ...... surgery that has been performed. However, patients undergoing mammoplasty, breast reconstruction, or facial surgery typically stay in the hospital much longer after surgery. To prevent any infection, antibiotics are administered to the patient. When the patient undergoes surgery, especially in Western society, it is sometimes not easy for the patient to accept the result of the operation which does not meet the patient's expectations. This problem could lead the patient to repeat the surgical procedure because the result does not meet their expectations. Performing too many surgeries can affect the patient's health. As mentioned by Lite and Dillon (2007) in the Daily News, the mother of famous rapper Kanye West, Donna West, was found dead in her home after undergoing breast reduction and abdominoplasty surgery which involves removing the excess flesh from the abdomen..
