1.Introductory paragraphImagine waking up one day and having a terrible headache. You feel dizzy and rub your head to try to relieve the pain. You feel behind your ears and realize that area is swollen, as well as under your armpits and genital area. You feel too sick to get out of bed and the next day you're covered in pus filled with boils the size of your fist or larger. They become infected, turn black, and smell worse than death itself. About half of your neighbors suffer the same fate and die. Sounds terrible, doesn't it? It was, but ultimately the human race benefited from it. Even though many people lost their lives due to the Black Death, it is good that this happened because of the societal and medical advancements that were made. The plague brought about the Renaissance. The Black Death was a positive event in human history.2. Description of the event Between 1347 and 1350 (Carmichael 490), life was not good. The Black Death was rampant and people were afraid. There are three different forms of plague. The most common form, bubonic plague, occurs when the lymphatic system becomes infected. Lymph nodes may swell to the size of an egg; the skin turned black in places; the infected person would have fever, chills and headache; muscle pain and exhaustion; and a horrible smell. Typically, it would have taken two to seven days for victims to die, and the mortality rate could have been 50 to 90 percent. Pneumonic plague is an infection of the respiratory system. Symptoms include coughing, coughing up blood, chest pain, shortness of breath and high fever. It would typically have taken less than two days for victims to die, and the mortality rate was nearly 100%. When God did not respond to their requests, they began to question the effectiveness of the Catholic Church. Many Church leaders also died or left their flocks out of fear. Many survivors became cynical about religion or turned to more personal piety. Like all European institutions, the Church was shaken by the Black Death, even if it benefited financially from it.
