  • Essay / How We Got the King James Version - 715

“The King James Version has become so sanctified by time and use that for many people it has become the Bible. » Our English BibleJames I was born in 1566 and died in 1625. He belonged to the House of Stuart with all the other kings of Scotland and a few of England. James I became king of England upon the death of Elizabeth I, his cousin. This happened in 1603. When he came to the throne of England, he was also King of Scotland and reigned as King James IV. He ruled England and Scotland until his death. Charles I, James' son, was the successor to both thrones. James believed in the divine right of kings, the ability to rule as king by God and not by the people. James gave his name to many things, and Jamestown is probably the other one more famous than the King James Version of the Bible. James, formerly known as King James VI of Scotland, is accredited for this version of the Bible translation. Around 1603, James came to England to succeed Elizabeth to the throne and became King James I. Upon his arrival in England, the Hampton Court Conference was held to hear the problems of the Church. This conference did not achieve its objective, but it produced one of the best translations of the word of God. John Reynolds, president of Corpus Christi College, was the sole inspiration for this new translation and it was he who encouraged King James to embark on the translation. This immediately caught James' attention and he quickly began translations soon after. There was one stipulation that James had and that was that there be no notes in the margins of the new book. He found all these notes false and dangerous for kings. Within six months the general plans were drawn up and ready for execution. James had to choose scholars he believed to be trustworthy and ready to accomplish the task ahead of him. His original list included 54 such scholars. Before this was completed, this list had fallen to 47. The reason for the decline in numbers was due to death and some of the scholars also retired from work. Now that all these men had been chosen, they had to be divided into teams.
