Essay / Queen Isabella of Castile - 749
Many people have heard of Queen Isabella of Spain who changed Spain and the New World. Although many people consider Queen Isabella to be a mean, evil and ignorant person, she changed history forever by fighting for the power of the kingdom with her brother and fighting the Muslim Moors to take back Spain from Catholic rule . Although her marriage was difficult, they united the two previously separate kingdoms of Spain. She was also responsible for the voyage of Christopher Columbus and much more that left its mark on the world of history. At the age of 6, she decided to marry Ferdinand, the son of John II of Narve. After the marriage was annulled several times due to disagreements with the kingdoms, the marriage took place on October 19, 1469. They were first cousins and so their marriage would not be legal unless they obtained a dispensation from the pope. A year later they obtained the Pope's dispensation and they were soon legally married. She contributed to the world's most famous voyage to the New World. She also got Spain to reform its government and she couldn't have done it without her husband's help as they united Spain and changed the laws. She also reconquered Granada from the Muslims, by which time she had conquered Spain at one point in history. This is why Queen Isabella is important to the story. Without it, we would not have been able to spread Christianity in Europe; the Muslims would have taken over. Queen Isabella is a great inspiration for women's power. Even though she was considered a wicked woman for driving out all the Jews and Muslims. She helped the Christian world to develop. This is why Queen Isabella is very important to the world of history. Works Cited Meyer, Carolyn. Isabel, Jewel of Castile: Spain, 1466. New York, NY: Scholastic, 2000. Print.
