Essay / Symbolism and Foreshadowing in Othello - 918
In the play Othello by William Shakespeare, throughout the play he had depicted symbolism and foreshadowing. These caused most of the characters to act stupidly. This brings us to a suspenseful ending that has the loved ones confronting each other. Not realizing what is happening between the characters can create confusion in the plans of the play. Likewise, by connecting each of the following characters, we made it seem like maybe we knew something was going to happen at the end. Throughout the play we can recognize that the handkerchief plays an important role in all the characters. This is done by showing how each of the characters acts, which constitutes a loss. Due to its poor placement, some characters will do something they normally wouldn't do. The first symbol is the handkerchief. Othello had given this to Desdemona as an important gift of his love for her. By having this gift, she showed that she is faithful to be a part of his marriage and that she wants him to see that she wants to be with him. Because Iago tells his wife to take it, it is a symbol that Othello will think she is having fun with Cassio. Since he has the missing handkerchief, he believes that she is now becoming unfaithful to his love. Because of the color of white and red, it has meaning. The white represents the purity of the first marriage they had, it means she was once the faithful daughter he married. The red strawberries are dyed with the blood of a virgin. As she didn't think she had lost it, she looked for it everywhere because it could be in her hands. Once lost, it is as if it has lost its purity. Likewise, the handkerchief has a similarity with sheets. They are both in the middle of a paper...... Demona's handkerchief was the main object and symbol known for her betrayal. As a result, Iago was the main reason we are victims of betrayal in the play. Othello's giving of the handkerchief was a sign of his affection for his beloved wife. Additionally, he then moves from one person to another, which was caused by Iago. Once Othello becomes jealous, it causes him to act like an illusion from Desdemona. She has been faithful throughout their marriage and thinks she cheated on him. The people Iago betrayed with this handkerchief were: Othello, Emila, Cassio and Desdemona. Additionally, it was believed to have significance as a symbol of sacred trust. It was known as the “oath of love” to Desdemona. Works Cited Shakespeare, William and Jane Coles. Othello.
