During the Great Depression, the task of being President of the United States became even greater, due to economic suffering. Herbert Hoover was one of the presidents facing this challenge. In fact, he was president at the time of the stock market crash. During his tenure as president, many controversies surrounded him. Many people thought he wouldn't reach his full potential as president because of some of the things he helped organize to help a struggling economy. In reality, he did more than others before him for the economy, but unfortunately it was not enough and the little help he provided came too late. Part of the reason he acted too late was due to his views and thoughts on the Depression and how the government should address it. President Hoover's thoughts and opinions greatly influenced the economy and how it was managed during his presidency. “President Hoover was deeply concerned about the suffering. However, Hoover did not believe that the government should become directly involved in helping to end the economic crisis. He feared the government was becoming too powerful. It was up to businesses, he believed, to end this recession. (Davidson 750) Throughout his tenure as president, President Hoover had many thoughts on the economy. One thing he was very adamant about was that the government should not have too much power to turn around the economy. He was concerned that it would have too much of a negative impact instead of a positive impact. Instead, he believed that businesses should work together and provide more jobs with reasonable pay to workers. He also disagreed with the government's relief programs. He thought these programs were... middle of paper ... and many of them were unemployed and suffering financially. This caused a lot of friction in Washington, as there was a lot of debate about whether or not weather should give these men their bonuses immediately or make them wait. Ultimately it was decided that these men would have to wait and President Hoover declared that they must leave. When these men refused to leave, he had to resort to harsher tactics. He asked General Douglas MacArthur to do what was necessary to remove these men. And he did, he brought severe military equipment such as tanks, tear gas and other military supplies. After this event, many people were outraged and angry. They felt that what happened was too harsh and should have been handled differently.
