Being part of a sports team not only helps a child develop physically, but also mentally and emotionally. If asked, anyone who has ever practiced/played sport will answer two things: ; “Sport has had a positive effect on my life” or “Sport has not changed my life”. However, a majority will likely say the former. The advantage of sport is that, for many, it becomes an outlet. Athletes can use sports to escape for a while and forget about any problems they might be experiencing or release any aggression they might have built up inside them. Of course, sport does not always have to be aggressive, but also friendly. By playing sports, children learn many skills, have a positive impact on their health, but there is also a slight downside. Playing sports in general helps people learn many different and useful skills. One of the most affected areas is social development. As noted in the article “Sports and Children: Creating a Healthy Environment for Every Child,” “Children who play sports: develop leadership and teamwork skills; improve their knowledge of rules and social roles; experience supportive relationships with adults; build relationships with peers; and having the opportunity to interact with other people's children” (Engle, 2001). In addition to this, children who play sports also learn to cooperate with others, be respectful, honest, organized and play fairly. These skills are not only important for children, but necessary.
