Essay / « Orange Is The New Black” by Laverne Cox - 1164
In an interview, Katie Couric sat down with Cox and transgender model Carmen Carrera to discuss their experiences as high-profile transgender women. However, Couric seemed "...mostly interested in talking to the two women about their genitals, in order to 'educate' others who might not be 'familiar with transgender people'" (McDonough 2014). This demonstrates a glaring lack of sociolinguistic skill necessary to determine which questions are and are not appropriate in a social context. No cis woman would be expected to answer questions about her genitals during a television interview, but these inappropriate questions are ones that trans women face far too often. The fascination with investigating whether or not they fit the mainstream media's view of what a woman is – a person whose gender identity and genitalia match – results in a complete disregard for what would otherwise be a very clearly taboo subject. Additionally, her use of the term "transgender" as a noun shows a clear lack of understanding of even the most basic rhetoric used to describe trans individuals, once again highlighting the linguistic divide between cis gender women and trans women. gender trans.
