  • Essay / Why Physical Education Should Be Mandatory - 1268

PurposeThe purpose of my proposal is to request that physical education be made compulsory at Salida Elementary School. Children do not do enough activities during the school year. Childhood obesity is increasing in the United States. Therefore, we need to teach children how to make healthier decisions when they are young so that they have the tools to lead healthy lives.SummaryCurrently at Salida Elementary School, I do not see any physical education taught. The children have free time, but most of them are content to walk around or sit at a table. Teachers do not have physical education equipment in their classrooms to construct any type of activity. I would like to propose that Salida Elementary School begin teaching physical education on a regular basis. With each age group, the program would be simple. Staff could work together and come up with easy, fun activities that grade levels could do together or separately. Teachers should also try to be good role models when it comes to the snacks and drinks they bring to class. Children believe that if their teacher drinks a soda, everything is fine with them. Also, most of the time, children should not be given candy as a reward or special prize. They should replace it with stickers, erasers, pencils and markers. Make it fun! However, for physical education to become part of the daily curriculum, schools would need appropriate equipment. Each grade level should share equipment recommended for physical education time only. Teachers could have separate play equipment in their classrooms to use during recess. Therefore, the school district should purchase physical education equipment for each grade level. There are six grade levels on campus, kindergarten...... middle of paper ......ble (Figure 2) shows 2011 childhood obesity rates among children ages 10 to 17 years. We could also integrate physical education into the day, without the need to add extra hours and without affecting classroom learning...
