  • Essay / Ethical Decision - 703

When I worked as a customer service representative at the bank, one of my responsibilities was to supervise the tellers. I was friends with two of the cashiers who worked there at the time. We would hang out outside of work and have a good time. At some point, I started to notice that they were being too friendly with each other and behaving inappropriately for a professional environment. I decided to confront them and they admitted to me that they were dating. It was then that I realized I was faced with an ethical dilemma. I had a choice to make: one was to look away, pretending not to notice or do anything; the second choice was to talk to them and try to explain to them that they can't continue to behave this way, and the third choice, which is the right choice, is to report them to my manager. I had to think for a while, and that's when I realized that my job was important to me and that I was their supervisor first and their friend second and that I had to do something. thing to remedy this situation if I consider myself a professional. I felt it would be nice if I gave them the benefit of the doubt and let them know how I feel and what situation they are putting me in. I hoped they would start behaving like adults. I was trying to resolve this situation at all costs without involving upper management and saving them from trouble. I tried to maintain their dignity and my own. One day I took them aside, confronted them about their behavior and told them it had to stop. They need to start acting professionally at work and if they choose to continue dating, they can do so outside of work. After our long conversation, they became very distant and angry with me; however, I felt like I did the right thing at that time. Additionally, they continued to act inappropriately and it started to become very visible to neither me nor some customers who were commenting. At this point, I had no choice but to report them to my manager. When I spoke to my manager I told her the whole situation including the fact that I spoke to them before coming to see her and got no results..
