Essay / Robert Zimeckis' Contact and the Existence of God
The world is a funny place. No one really understands everything that has happened, what is happening and what is going to happen. In order to dictate how we got there, we use theories to satisfy our curiosity. Theories come from everywhere, for example religion gives us simple fairy tale like stories about our existence and science gives us more of a rational mathematical point of view. The problem is: how do you know which one is right and which one is wrong? The honest answer to this question is that there is no answer. Neither theory is 100% verifiable; each theory lacks evidence. And yet, to this day, people are so wrapped up in their beliefs that the planet struggles to make progress in the study of how we came to be and there is a constant conflict between science and science. religion. Robert Zemeckis' film Contact resolves the age-old conflict between science and religion through the myth of the hero. The film demonstrates that if people were able to accept religious and scientific worldviews, we would be able to move forward and discover exactly how we got there. This conflict between science and religion is clearly visible in the film Contact where the main character Elli has an atheistic and opinionated worldview and where her companions throughout the film share different worldviews such as agnosticism, materialism and fundamentalism. But what exactly is a worldview? To me, a worldview is simply how we see everything in front of us: do we see things positively, do we believe that God created the earth, and do we believe in fairy tales? When looking for the definition of worldview, the phrase that strikes the eye is “a particular philosophy of life or worldview.” A Christian worldview is that “there is one absolute God.” A person with a very good middle of paper......he scientific field believes in science, science involves facts, experiments and evidence. They do not believe in God because religion has no facts, no evidence and no experiments have been conducted to prove the existence of God. Religious believers are taught to believe and dedicate their lives to God. If someone has to prove the non-existence of God, in their mind they are not virtuous. Science and religion are in conflict only because they are opposed, they are poles apart. Science believes in facts and hates unreliable evidence, while religion is all about faith and believing in the word of God without proof. The conflict is there because, regardless, the beliefs do not match, one is based on faith while the other is based on facts. Now how is a person holding either viewpoint supposed to agree to be either truthful or factual ??
