Essay / Vaccines for Children - 2500
IntroductionBegun in late 1994, the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program is a major preferred program that provides states with free vaccines for underprivileged children. These vaccines are provided by clinics and doctors who primarily enroll in the VFC program. By enrolling in the program, these clinics and physician offices must comply with certain standards established by the VFC as well as the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) (Richard Kent Zimmerman, 2001).Program OverviewVaccines for Children (VFC) The program helps provide appropriate vaccines to children whose parents or guardians are not necessarily able to afford or maintain appropriate health care, causing children to miss out on much-needed vaccines. This program helps ensure that all children, regardless of their financial ability, have a better chance of receiving recommended vaccines on time. Vaccines available through the VFC program are those recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, also known to health care professionals as ACIP. Funding for this program comes from the OMB, the Office of Management Budget, and the CMS or Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The VFC program is not limited to providing appropriate vaccines to children, but this program also helps educate providers and medical professionals through education, providing free vaccines to registered clinics and doctor's offices and also offers a training on vaccine handling (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012).
