George Roger Clark was known as the "conqueror of the Old Northwest" during the American Revolutionary War. George Clark had become of great assistance in capturing the British and Indian territories, northwest of the Thirteen Colonies. Clark was a military leader of the American settlers during the American Revolutionary War, helping the Americans achieve success in the Northwest, and was known for conquering most of the Northwest Territory for the Thirteen Colonies. (“George Rogers Clark” 1)Clark, in the 1770s, helped Kentucky defend itself against Native Americans. At the time, Clark was transporting gunpowder to the American-British border. The Native Americans, who lived in the Northwest, disliked the Americans in the Northwest and their claims to Kentucky and, with the support of the British, waged war against the Americans. Clark was now responsible for defending the colonies and was promoted to major. Clark then made plans to take British forts in the region and persuaded Governor Patrick Henry to support him in capturing the forts. Clark had gained the support of Patrick Henry, was promoted to lieutenant colonel and given command of the mission (“George Clark” 1). With command of the mission, Clark had led 175 men who marched to Fort Kaskaskia, Illinois, in six days. The fort was almost defenseless and was easily taken by Clark's forces. Clark had sent Captain Leonard Helm to capture Fort Sackville, after learning that the fort was not defended against American spies. Leonard Helm had then captured the fort, but was recaptured by Henry Hamilton shortly afterwards.
