Whether college student-athletes should be paid has become a hotly debated topic. A student-athlete's incentive to play a college sport should not be motivated by money, but by the love of the game. It has been argued that colleges make money and student-athletes should therefore be compensated. When considering college revenues from sporting events and memorabilia from popular sports, such as football and basketball, one must remember that colleges incur enormous expenses for all of their athletic programs. If revenue from sports is the determining factor in compensating student-athletes, several major problems arise from such a decision. The first problem is who gets a salary and the second problem is how much should be paid to them. Additionally, if athletic revenues do not cover the cost of student-athlete salaries, tuition costs will almost certainly increase. The other side of the coin is that the student-athlete who entered college, in many cases on scholarship, chose to play a particular sport because he or she enjoys playing that game and therefore decided to participate in it and should not expect to be paid as a professional athlete. By paying student-athletes a salary, it would significantly change the college life of student-athletes as well as non-student-athletes. With a possible scholarship amounting to $200,000, this can be considered a fair exchange because even though they receive a free college education, they also have the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities to the world of professional sports . Not only are tuition paid, but student-athletes also receive books, meals and housing through the scholarship. These student-athletes spend an enormous amount of time training and playing. This can eventually cause the student-athlete to fall behind in the middle of the institution they are attending. Paying student-athletes to participate in an athletic program would dilute the primary reason students attend college, which is to receive an education. By offering a salary to student-athletes, it would change the reason students apply to college and university. Instead of wanting to pursue studies to receive an education, students prefer to take classes in a sport in the hope of obtaining an income. Student-athletes should have the opportunity to participate in an athletic program because of their abilities and love of the game. Additionally, colleges and universities would be negatively impacted as overall revenues and expenses would change. The standards currently in place to meet the needs of all, student-athletes as well as non-student-athletes, will be radically changed and therefore cannot be guaranteed..
