A theme in The Cask of Amontillado is revenge. Montresor explains that he was deeply hurt and offended by Fortunato. Montresor does not simply say that he will take revenge on Fortunato, but he has "sworn" to revenge. This demonstrates Montresor's commitment to his revenge. His revenge consists of a carefully crafted plan that will end Fortunato's life. His carefully crafted plan demonstrates Montresor's obsession with revenge. Montresors' need for revenge is so strong that he is willing to end the life of someone he calls "dear Fortunato" and "friend". Revenge can also play a big role in the Montresors family. We can make this hypothesis by reading the family motto “No one provokes me with impunity” and also “the foot crushes a snake whose fangs are buried in the heel”. The preceding quotes demonstrate that the Montresor family will take revenge on anyone who causes any form of harm or discomfort to their family.
