  • Essay / Higher Education - 1065

Properly engaging students through appropriate learning environments and supporting students to succeed in their higher education is the basic requirement of any educational institution, but the quality of American higher education has been questionable since the growth of student campuses. During the 20th century, national reports raised the issue of the provision of non-individual and passive environments on campuses, which could not support students in their learning (Kezar and Kinzie, 2006). Additionally, educational institutions have failed to contribute to the social or academic integration of transfer or international students, or to promote diversity among international and U.S. students. Without an appropriate framework that encourages learning and development, the future of individual students and the university community is uncertain. Student engagement is clearly not a unilateral responsibility, as the interest of both students and educational institutions is necessary for effective collaboration to create an active, supportive and engaging environment. Future research could focus on cross-cultural studies to determine the behavioral and cognitive characteristics of students from different cultural backgrounds in order to understand which educational approaches would prove most effective in encouraging their socialization, learning and development..
