The 160th SOAR (A) is the only special operations aviation regiment in the world. The topics covered will relate to the operational history of the unit carried out by the soldiers. These soldiers are known as Night Stalkers due to their mastery of night operations. They undergo special training and use special helicopters and other special equipment to accomplish their mission in all-weather operations, day and night. The Night Stalkers begin their story with Operation Eagle Claw. This operation was to consist of rescuing the 66 hostages from the Iranian embassy from the United States. The mission was simple: bring the 8 Navy RH-53D (Sea Stallion) helicopters to Desert One (FARP), refuel and load a 120-man assault team, fly to the US Embassy, extract the 66 hostages, get back on the helicopters and extract via Tehran. . This led to the Holloway Commission which examined Operation Eagle Claw and made it a lessons learned experience. Some additional factors were training, intelligence, pilots, aircrew, helicopters and weather. So they decided to create a small unit with dedicated staff and equipment to ensure these mistakes wouldn't happen again. Naturally, they wanted to remove personnel and equipment from a unit that had some experience. So they turned to the branch and unit that had the most in the 101st Airborne, having had flying experience in Vietnam. So they pulled out Charlie and Delta companies from the 158th Aviation Battalion with their new UH-60 Black Hawks, they also need heavy lift capabilities and picked up Alpha Company from the 159th Aviation Battalion with CH-47Cs , then they needed light reconnaissance aircraft. so I spoke to Bravo Company's 229th Attack Helicopter Battalion with the OH-6A...... middle of paper ......vival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) level C+ and helicopter survival training over water (Dunker School) to name just a few of the schools these soldiers will go through.
