  • Essay / The movie Pain and Gain by Michael Bay - 2198

The artifact I chose for my analyst is the movie Pain & Gain directed by Michael Bay. This film is based on true events that occurred in Miami in the mid-1990s. The main character, Danny Lugo, is a personal trainer whose life revolved around fitness. During his employment at Sunshine Gym, he met Adrian Doorbal, another personal trainer. The two realize that their hard work at the gym has allowed them to gain big muscles and empty pockets. Lugo soon covets the income and lifestyle of a new gym member he begins training: Victor Kershaw, whom Lugo considers a crook. Inspired by motivational speaker Johnny Wu, Lugo decides to be an "actor" and hatches a plan to extort Kershaw's assets by kidnapping and torturing him. Lugo and Doorbal soon realize they need a third member to accomplish a job of this magnitude and recruit Paul Doyle, a recently released cocaine addict who has turned to religion. The three-man crew, nicknamed Sunshine Gang, managed to kidnap Victor Kershaw and extort his assets. The crew then attempted to assassinate Kershaw, but was unsuccessful. When Kershaw informed law enforcement what had happened, they thought the story was too far-fetched to be true. The Sunshine gang apparently got away with all the crimes committed against Kershaw. Soon their money ran out and they had to look for another success to continue their new lifestyle. The crew then decides to eliminate a wealthy businessman named Frank Grigas. In this second shot, the three men murder Frank and his wife and dump the cut-up bodies in the Everglades. Law enforcement quickly went after the Sunshine gang and made the arrest. Lugo and Doorbal were convicted and sentenced to death for the murders...... middle of paper...... behavior because the actor is following a higher calling. Lugo's highest calling is his responsibility to be a true American, a patriot, and to care for people he considers unfit to have nice things. Danny Lugo and the Sunshine gang were tired of being left behind and deprived. For Lugo and Doorbal, a life devoted to the gym left them without any real accomplishments. They justified the kidnapping and torture of Victor Kershaw by believing that they deserved his wealth more than he did. They didn't look for an alternative to the American dream, they simply saw someone living it and deemed them unworthy. Paul Doyle is drawn into this business, but not because he thought Kershaw didn't deserve his life. Doyle was pushed into this situation by Lugo, Lugo was blinded by his corrupted vision of the American dream and would do whatever was necessary to live it..
