Power has been an important factor when it comes to countries and leaders, expanding countries' borders and finding new lands through to exploitation. Power is used to show control and make progress in their country. Countries create ideas of what humanity should be and when the idea of power consumes the mind, to the point where the idea becomes more important than humans. What will happen when power becomes a god to be worshiped and requiring sacrifice? In the books Heart of Darkness and The Gods Will Have Blood, he demonstrates what power can do to people and countries. Power enslaves people and corrupts man; even those who are gentle and compassionate can change. Once a person gains power, they can become consumed and corrupted by the need to meet and satisfy their needs. The satisfaction of need can be demonstrated in many ways, but the books show the ideas of power through imperialism, revolution, and the reign of terror that took place in France, which left many people hungry and poor. Anatole France The Will of God in Blood speaks of the final power struggle of the French Revolution gripping the French. The aristocrats have been overthrown and the poor are struggling to feed themselves as they face starvation. Cities are swept by fear and hunger, while a young revolutionary artist named Gamelin is appointed magistrate and vested with the power of life and death over French citizens. A power that is used recklessly due to his intense idealism and determination; creating a vast movement of violence and a reign of terror, which extended throughout Russia and Europe.
