Creating each new bag means a little more daily damage to the environment. Bhutan first banned the use of plastic bags in 1999. This measure was strengthened in 2005 and again in 2009, as plastic bags pose a great threat to the environment and were therefore banned in Bhutan. Plastic bags remain a source of profit for retailers and customers, but their impact on the environment has been reconsidered as mentioned, but the ban has proven to be mostly ineffective.
