Citizens in all parts of the world, developed and underdeveloped, would like to believe that slavery is no longer a reality in the modern world. America prides itself on being the land of the free, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Governments refuse to acknowledge the fact that such a thing exists within their borders. Slavery in its most heinous form lurks in the dark corners of every society. Human trafficking is undoubtedly one of the most monstrous human rights abuses still perpetrated today. It is imperative that more substantial efforts be made to combat the growing number of cases internationally. Nor should this effort be based solely on individual countries facing local cases; To achieve real results, countries must work together on a global scale to punish offenders in each country. This issue should be of great concern to people around the world, and if not, an initiative must be taken to raise global awareness on this issue. In order to create a safer and freer world, a global partnership must be created and stronger measures must be taken to end human trafficking in all its forms. The United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons defines human trafficking as “the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, kidnapping, fraud, deception, abuse of power or a position of vulnerability or the offering or acceptance of payments or advantages to obtain the consent of a person having authority over another person, for the purposes of exploitation. Exploitation must include, at the end of the paper, the millions of cases of human trafficking that occur daily around the world. This cannot be achieved by countries simply working individually to combat traffickers, the only way to truly rid the world of traffickers is if all nations come together to eradicate the practice globally. The issue of human trafficking should concern people from all walks of life and it is imperative that citizens raise awareness about this crime on a global scale so that fewer people are at risk of falling prey to this practice. If a truly free world is to exist, it is absolutely necessary for all countries to come together in a global partnership to create a world where traffickers are punished and imprisoned, where they can never again constitute a threat to civilized society.
