Essay / The Journey in A Good Man is Hard to Find - 1210
In “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” it's time to go to Florida for a family vacation. About halfway through their trip, Bailey, the father of the family, is reluctantly persuaded by his children, John Wesley and June Star, and takes them to see the old plantation house that the grandmother had mentioned previously. He turns onto the dirt road that the grandmother says the house is on and drives for quite a while; the grandmother realizes that the house is actually in Tennessee and not Georgia. That's when Pitty Sing, put away, escapes from the basket and clings to Bailey's neck. Bailey wrecks the car and the children's mother breaks her shoulder, but there are no other injuries, which upsets June Star more than the fact that an accident actually happened. As the family waits, a car arrives, but it's not the kind of help they expected. It's about the Misfit and his two-man band consisting of Bobby Lee and Hiram. The grandmother recognizes the Misfit and tries to convince him that he is a good man and that she "comes from good people" and that she does not want to kill the family, but above all she, a lady. Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find" uses the archetype of the journey to illustrate that selfishness and manipulation do not always result in victory in life. An archetype is a recurring image, symbol, character, or situation used to express a universal design. The journey archetype is one of the most frequently used. It sends a character, whether they know it or is sent unknowingly, to seek the truth of some information in their life. This journey includes a series of trials and tribulations that the character must face in order to understand why he is on this...... middle of paper ...... but, he touched the shoulder of The Misfit and he shot him three times. When Bobby Lee and Hiram returned, the grandmother was lying in a pool of blood, looking up at a cloudless sky with a smile on her face. The Misfit says, “She would have been a good woman if there had been someone to shoot her every minute of her life.” » Finally, before her death, the grandmother realizes that the only true “good man” who was so difficult to find is Jesus. It is possible to find Him, but it took a journey of faith that no one expected to take, including herself. She had to let go of all her manipulative and self-centered ways, as well as her focus on class and the outward manifestations of her Christian beliefs. In exchange for all her worldly belongings, she received the grace she had sought all her life. Finally, the grandmother received her Grace and went to Heaven..
