  • Essay / The importance of breakfast in schools - 785

April 17, 2014A nutritional problem in New Zealand society today is young people making poor nutritional choices for breakfast. There are many reasons why this happens, but one of the main ones is that some families cannot afford to feed their children a nutritious and healthy breakfast. Over the past few years, there has been a debate over whether offering breakfast in schools could help solve this problem. Breakfast in Schools is a program created to provide children who go to school hungry with a healthy and nutritional breakfast. I think school breakfast is a good concept, but it needs to be developed. There are real reasons why some parents can't afford to feed their children nutritional breakfasts. Food insecurity is a growing concern among families “especially as incomes fall and food prices continue to rise incessantly”, as indicated by the CPAG (Child Poverty Action Group). As incomes decline, pressure is placed on families to cover additional bills such as school fees, rent/mortgage fees and electricity bills, in addition to trying to feed their families. family. For this reason, CPAG found that "in 2005, food banks reported the largest increase in the number of people seeking help from working families." For those who really can't afford to treat their children to nutritional breakfasts, Breakfast in Schools is the perfect solution for their children going to school on an empty stomach to negatively impact their grades. “There is now a significant body of research showing that breakfast consumption contributes to students' school and school attendance” (Rampersaud 2005). However, some families might abuse this concept. They could not feed their children breakfast knowing that there is nutrition...... in the middle of the article ...... from CPAG, shows that "the reasoning is simple: children hungry people do not learn to feed them. improves their attendance, nutritional status, academic performance and behavior.” This helps the child to be engaged in their learning, making teaching easier. It also makes the learning process easier for other children, because the teacher is not focusing on a student's behavior and lack of engagement. Children going to school without breakfast is a major nutritional problem in today's society and needs to be addressed. Breakfast in schools is the perfect solution to this problem. Children are the main stakeholders and innocent victims of this situation and their needs must come first. With a program like School Breakfast, all stakeholders will benefit; children themselves, their peers, teachers, the wider community and society as a whole.
