Essay / Sex Trafficking: Modern Slavery - 1147
Sex trafficking according to the National Human Trafficking (2000) is defined as a modern form of slavery in which a commercial sexual act is induced by force, fraud or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such an act is under 18 years of age. Sex trafficking primarily involves force, fraud, and making underage women or men engage in activities against their will in order to obtain what they need in life. Most often, people are brought to the United States specifically looking for work, but they are unaware that they have fallen into sex trafficking. Such activities generally tarnish the image of the community where such practices are tolerated and further give people a bad image related to sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS. These organized crime groups (sex traffickers) can be highly structured organizations, led by a hierarchy of individuals and groups, with many key players, or small, decentralized, less organized groups of individuals who come together for a " commercial enterpriseā without a central leader. In sex trafficking, various elements form the basis of race, as a particular group of people are inherently induced by force, fraud, or other means to engage in such activity. For example, according to the UN, most sex trafficking victims come from Asia or Africa and seek greener pastures in foreign countries like the United Kingdom and the United States. Immigrant workers who do not have the required documents to work in a particular country are sometimes forced or defrauded into sex trafficking with fear of being deported to their own country. These victims normally accept such working conditions, due to their need for survival, which results in exploitation...... middle of paper ...... information should include specific contact details of agencies and departments federal authorities who investigate trafficking and prosecute traffickers. Finally, sanctions must be adapted to the crime. Sentencing guidelines must reflect the seriousness of the crime. The standards of proof must change. Currently, prosecutions of traffickers depend on the testimony of victims. Videotapes or wiretaps should be allowed as evidence. When the above structure is put in place, the dynamics of sex trafficking can change once and for all. To change the dynamics of sex trafficking, there should be a national anti-trafficking plan that recommends prevention, protection of victims, and prosecution of traffickers. If there is no plan recommending the protection and prosecution of offenders, sex trafficking will remain a problem to be fought from generation to generation..
