Essay / AMERICAN INFLUENCE ON CANADA IN THE 1920S - 780S
The 1920s and 1930s were when Canada began to become more independent by slowly cutting ties with Britain, but lost its new independence by being influenced by America. Canada has been influenced by its inventions, cultural trends and economy. Canada has adopted many American inventions into its homes, as well as its cultural trends through entertainment and lifestyle. Additionally, Canada was economically dependent on America. Overall, Canada was influenced throughout the 1920s, and by 1929 it became very similar to America. The 1920s brought the most astonishing number of consumer inventions Canada had ever seen. From 1923 to 1929, many Canadians had full-time jobs and a regular salary. And with the increasing amount of media advertising, Canadians have been overwhelmed by the amount of pamphlets and catalogs filled with new products to purchase and enjoy. Although some were invented by Canadians, most come from America. Inventions such as: the refrigerator, the air conditioner, the washing machine, and the pop-up toaster were found in thousands of Canadian homes by 1929. As Bill Bryson said, “[Americans] were, to begin with, so Seduced by the idea of progress, they invented things without knowing if these things would be useful for anything. Americans invented so many things during the booming 1920s that Canadians were left behind, but one invention revolutionized Canada forever, the automobile. The automobile was enormously successful in Canada, not only commercially, but its commercial mass production on assembly lines generated hundreds of jobs with good wages. By 1929, many Canadian families owned automobiles and nearly 600,000 kilometers of roads were paved in Canada. In the United States... middle of paper... the national product fell by 40%, 30% of the working population was unemployed, a fifth of the population became dependent on government assistance, and wages fell fall. Close trade ties and economic dependence have plunged Canada into a downward spiral of economic distress. In conclusion, Canada was influenced throughout the 1920s by America, and by 1929, Canada became very similar to America in terms of social, economic, and product trends. But has this stopped in the modern era? Canada continues to be heavily influenced by the amount of American products and media coming to Canada. Canada has tried over time to prevent the onslaught of the American invasion, but the American invasion is observed on a very large global scale. Blockbuster movies, TV shows, and products, among others, are usually based on American culture, views, or domain. It is a reign that has not yet been stopped.
