Essay / Creating and Managing Effective Teams - 1994
Creating and Managing Effective TeamsCreating and Managing Effective Teams in today's work environment is very different than it was a short time ago . Each generation of American workers brings new ideas, rules, and methodologies that must be considered when developing an effective team. Some of the newest ideas may have been foreign to managers just ten years ago. One example is that many companies today are becoming more socially responsible. A recent article in Incentive states: “Social responsibility, it seems, is the new signing bonus” (Flanagan, p4, 2006). Managers rarely have a perfect set of employees, a perfect environment, or a conflict-free team in order to develop an effective team. These issues make the ability to effectively manage these teams more important than ever. The simulation for Luxurion was a great example of good team management, even when the team is not perfectly assembled. This article will examine which team member was chosen, why those choices were made, the issues resolved during the simulation, and the end result after completing the simulation. In the case of the Luxurion Auto simulation of creating effective team management, I did not choose the same team that the simulator would have chosen. Not choosing the perfect team was a good thing, because I was taught many years ago that the true test of a leader is when they are able to overcome obstacles and still accomplish the task at hand . I began the simulation by looking at the individuals' skills, personal information, and the five positions available for the seven choices. I then tried to match this information with available jobs. Since there was so little information, it was difficult to fully understand the candidates, but I was confident that the choices I made were solid. Having the right employees but using them in the wrong way is a mistake far too many employers make and it's not a mistake I wanted to make..
