Essay / Hong Kong Species: East Asian Porcupine and Red Muntjac
Existing Challenge; Among medium- and large-sized local mammals, the East Asian Porcupine and Red Muntjac are the most abundant and widely distributed species in Hong Kong. They were recorded in more than 50% of the areas studied between 2002 and 2006 by camera trap (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation). However, for one of their habitats, Tai Lam Country Park, located in the west of the New Territories, is the second largest national park in Hong Kong. Over the past decade, the park has suffered from frequent hillside fires and soil erosion. Using afforestation as a remedial measure, one can see lush fire resistant vegetation, such as Taiwan Acacia, Brisbane Box for example (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation). In fact, the emergence of hillside fires is generally in the moderate slope and steep slope side, there is rough terrain, partially exposed rocks. Due to long-term exposure to sunlight, there is less humidity, also affected by dry northwest monsoons every year, therefore, the ground surface is low and has a low amount of accumulations nutrients (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation). Due to the geographical environmental factor, the growth speed of trees is slower than that of other forest plantations. As a result, large burned areas and slow vegetation growth cause wildlife like the Red Muntjac, this type of protected animals, to lose their habitat and foraging. For example, as a herbivore, this mammal nibbles on leaves, twigs and various fruits. Additionally, except during the breeding season, this animal is solitary and territorial and likes to hide in dense shrubs and thick forest cover to avoid domestic dogs, Burmese pythons and humans, and uses its secretions under its eyes to mark its territory (SPCA). H...... middle of paper......it is more strange to make fabrics, or profit from making products, which they can grab in the park area either by capturing them, or by pulling them. The Red Muntjac can be found in scrubland or in the forest on a foggy evening. Fodder collection may be one of the reasons for low regeneration in the rural park area. 3. Illegal hunting and poaching Hunting and poaching have been assessed as a serious threat to the barking deer. As Red Muntjac is a delicate venison, many Hong Kong villagers, including some mainlanders, favor it. In addition, the antlers and meat of the Red Muntjac have a very high medicinal value, for this reason, in order to earn income, many male Red Muntjac have been illegally hunted, which could lead to a critical decline in the population of barking deer. Also likes to collect male skulls, preserved skin and capture or hunt fresh Red Muntjac for food.
