  • Essay / Prayer and Religion in Schools - 1050

Religion and prayer can benefit students in educational settings by contributing positively to better grades and better behavior. Personal faith and prayer are important to people from many backgrounds. Some people believe that this need for religious stimulation includes young people in our school systems. There are different reasons why knowledge of religion and prayer may be important for students. For example, if students are unfamiliar with various religious faiths, it may be difficult for them to have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of other cultures. There are also opposing sides to this issue. Some people believe that prayer in an educational context could be used to persuade students to believe certain things that they would not otherwise believe. We live in a diverse world, so it can be difficult for everyone to agree on religious beliefs and what, if any, prayers to pray. Incorporating religious practices has been shown to increase awareness of the beliefs and values of different cultures. The article “Teaching Religion in American Public Schools: A Necessary Disruption” explains how “in our globalized society, it is more important than ever to know and understand the religious beliefs of others” (Passe, J. and Willox, L., 2009). This statement is so true. The more knowledge students have about diverse ways of thinking, the better they can relate to and understand the world around them. The article goes on to say: “Without studying religion, how can a student understand subjects such as the Crusades; religious pursuits; the formation of India and Pakistan…” (Passe, J. and Willox, L., 2009).
