This allegory takes place in a cave where some prisoners have been chained since childhood. These prisoners face a wall and behind them there is a big fire and people pass by with objects, which casts shadows which the prisoners see and interpret as reality. When one of the prisoners finally breaks free and discovers that "reality" is something completely different from what he and the other prisoners were used to, it is almost impossible for him to tell the other prisoners. The other prisoners are so blinded by their image of reality and are extremely closed-minded. According to Plato's allegory, general terms or our everyday language are simply things that we can only grasp with our minds.
