  • Essay / Civil Engineers: Builders of Tomorrow - 2018

Every individual has the opportunity to decide their future career path. There are different fields to choose from, such as the medical field or the business field, and each requires different qualifications and interests. One of the career fields that people choose to go into is engineering, of which there are many different types, such as petroleum, electrical, and aerospace engineering. Although civil engineering techniques and ideology have been around for centuries, they continue to grow and evolve over time with innovative and advanced technologies. Civil engineering is the planning and construction of infrastructure that benefits civilization. It was developed in ancient times, when the Egyptian architect Imhotep designed Egypt's first pyramid, the Pyramid of Djoser. This achievement was so significant during this period that Imhotep was given the honorable title of deity. He is recognized as the first civil engineer for this feat, as well as for his design of the first columns. Columns were an integral part of many structures built during this era, such as the Karnak Temple, which is "the largest temple complex ever built by man" (www.touregypt.net). The standard of design and beauty of these temples was so high that “when the Romans first arrived in Egypt, they were impressed by the Egyptian temples” (www.touregypt.net). The ancient Egyptians also invented the first ramp and lever, which allowed them to build the pyramids. The Chinese were also advanced in civil engineering. The Great Wall is a testament to their knowledge on the subject, as they managed to design and build a structure of such monumental size and length that it managed to withstand the passage of time. This structure...... middle of paper ......s, converts these ideas into a design and exercises these ideas in the field. Works Cited Brown, David J. Bridges. Buffalo: Firefly Books Ltd, 2005.
